Sitka experienced a brief electrical outage Tuesday night (6-2-26) just before 10:00 p.m. Power was restored shortly after 11:00 p.m.
The outage was caused by a cracked transformer on the Green Lake Powerplant’s transmission line, according to a press release from the City and Borough of Sitka. The Green Lake Powerplant supplies roughly half of Sitka’s electricity. The interruption led to outages across portions of town.
Operators at the Blue Lake Powerplant were able to supply additional power and restore service. The town’s electrical system will continue to use the Blue Lake supply while a new transformer is installed at the Green Lake Transformer Yard.
Sitka’s Electric Department is monitoring the system as repairs are made.
