Blue Lake Dam: Sitka’s ‘cut the fat hog’

The Blue Lake Dam site reopened to public access over the weekend (2-14-15), but there isn't much to see. Almost all of the additional 83-feet of dam height is underwater, thanks to an exceptionally wet winter.

Vikings storm Sitka

In a prelude to regional tournament action next month, the Petersburg Vikings dominated Sitka on Friday 48-33 in boy's basketball. The Wolves were missing several starters, but Petersburg's well-coordinated defense would be tough under any circumstances.

The battle over education funding in Alaska this year may have an unexpected casualty. This Tuesday (2-10-15), the House Education Finance Subcommittee began a conversation about ongoing state funding for Mt. Edgecumbe High School in Sitka.

Heritage society pairs maritime stories with old photographs

For their annual meeting on February 19th, the Sitka Maritime Heritage Society is inviting members of the public to share their photographs and stories of waterfront history. Rebecca Poulson and Joe D'Arienzo, the vice-president and treasurer of the society, talked about the inspiration for the exhibit, while moderator Eric Jordan shared tales of growing up on a boat. He brought in a 1952 photograph, complete with the family laundry hanging off the boat, named the Salty. D'Arienzo provided an update about the restoration of the Japonski Island Boathouse for historic boat work. Downloadable audio.

The Sitka School Board -- as usual -- is entering its annual budget cycle facing a significant deficit. But unlike past years, there’s no silver bullet from either the state or federal governments that’s likely to save the day.

Upcoming Board of Fish meeting the “Super Bowl” for ADF&G

KCAW's Robert Woolsey interviewed Dan Gray, the regional management coordinator for the Alaska Department of Fish & Game, to talk about the upcoming Board of Fish meeting in Sitka from February 23rd - March 3rd. SCH creates scholarship swimming lesson program

Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield gave Sitka Community Hospital a $3000 grant for water safety education. As Patrick Williams of SCH explains it, $1500 will be funneled into a 12-month scholarship program directed by Baranof Barracuda Swim Club to teach six children how to swim. Williams was joined by Coach Sioxha Tokman and Board President Kevin Knox to talk about the expansion of the swim lesson program and the upcoming state championship meet in Jueanu.
