French: Trading up to the 3rd floor of the capitol

Sen. Hollis French is making another bid for the executive branch, this time as Lt. Governor. The 12-year veteran of the Alaska state senate ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2010. French was in Sitka Monday (7-7-14) as part of a 10-day campaign swing through Southeast Alaska. He's been instrumental in organizing a citizen initiative to repeal the governor's oil tax bill -- SB 21 -- and says he'll make a good team with Byron Mallot.

After the crash: Searching for accountability in the Coast Guard

Four years ago, on July 7, 2010, a Coast Guard Air Station Sitka helicopter crashed off the coast of La Push, Washington, taking the lives of the aircraft’s commander and two crewman. The deaths of the Sitka airmen were three of 14 fatalities in the Coast Guard in a two-year period. Late last month, the Center for Investigative Reporting released an in-depth story examining the culture of safety -- and accountability -- in the Coast Guard.

John Littlefield’s legacy: Teaching subsistence as advocacy

Sitkans this week will mark 40 days since the passing of John Littlefield with a traditional celebration of his life. The food will be wild, local, and plentiful -- thanks in large part to his legacy. John Littlefield was a clan uncle, a father, a husband, and electrical contractor. But most of all, he was a passionate advocate for traditional subsistence rights.
