Sitka guidebook charts course for Fish-to-Schools programs

Sitka’s Fish-to-Schools program will be easier to reproduce in other communities, thanks to a new handbook from the Sitka Conservation Society. A Guide to Serving Local Fish in School Cafeterias was published online last week (3-14-14) by the Society. It contains everything someone needs to know to navigate the sometimes-choppy waters to get locally-caught seafood onto public school menus.

Sitka’s Fish-to-Schools creates resource guide, curriculum

The Sitka Conservation Society's Tracy Gagnon discusses their new Guide to Serving Local Fish in School Cafeterias. The guide offers resources for schools or parents interested in developing the networks needed to serve local fish in schools. It also has an elementary school curriculum. There will be a celebration/information event with the Sitka School Board and the Sitka Local Foods Network 6:30 PM Thu Mar 20 at Blatchley Middle School.

Analysis: Lineup favors Wolves, Lady Braves in state basketball finals

Basketball teams from Sitka have a realistic shot at reaching the finals of the state tournament this week -- and could even win. Both the Mt. Edgecumbe Lady Braves and the Sitka Wolves are well-positioned to advance, when tournament play begins on Thursday. Tom Hesse is the sports editor at the Daily Sitka Sentinel. Shop students raise a bit of hoop-la at Sitka gym

Manufacturing -- like everything else -- is becoming more computerized, but instead of replacing craftsmanship, digital technology is opening up possibilities for students to create things in ways that simply weren’t practical five or ten years ago. Three kids at Sitka High School are building a tool -- really just a customized piece of metal -- to do an unsung, but important, job in the community.
