Did you see a flash of pink racing by on Saturday? You may have seen a girl on the run!

Sitkans Against Family Violence hosted its 10th Annual “Girls on the Run 5K” this Saturday, gathering at Harrigan Centennial Hall to prep the “rockstar” runners with face paint, hair spray, and bangles. The group of runners, coaches, and “running buddies” then took the streets and trails for a 5K run.

The run marked the conclusion of a 10-week running program, that seeks to empower girls  through physical and emotional learning. This year, 34 girls in Sitka were put through the paces under the guidance of nine coaches.

Girls on the Run was founded in 1996 in Charlotte, NC  with a group of 13 girls. Now an international non-profit, Girls on the Run reported serving it’s millionth girl in the spring of 2015.
