“The actual most powerful thing that we can be is a parent or a mentor to the next generation,” Tribal judge and Indian Child Welfare Act attorney David Avraham Voluck said. “This is the most important thing that we do. But we’ve kind of lost our focus some.” (Image provided by Jean Swanson, Sitka Tribe of Alaska)

Becoming a father is life-changing. And, it’s not always easy. The “Fatherhood is Sacred” program offers support to Native and non-Native fathers, grandfathers, uncles and mentors in Sitka. KCAW’s Erin McKinstry spoke with co-facilitators Jean Swanson and David Avraham Voluck on the Morning Interview about the class and how it’s adapted to operate virtually during the pandemic.

The class meets at noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays via Zoom. Those interested in registering can contact Jean Swanson at 747-3968 or jean.swanson@sitkatribe-nsn.gov.
