5,610 tons in second Sitka herring opening

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game estimates fishermen cought roughly 5,600 tons of fish during the second opening on Monday. That brings the total harvested so far to about 10,400 tons, or more than a third of this year’s guideline harvest level.

UPDATE: 4,700 tons in first opener

Saturday's opening of the 2012 Sitka sac roe herring fishery brought in about 4,700 tons of the small silver fish. That’s the preliminary harvest estimate, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

Sitka Tribe’s ads protest herring harvest

A series of ads placed in the Sitka Sentinel, the Ketchikan Daily News and the Juneau Empire state that 29,000 tons is roughly equal to 58 million pounds. One of the ads claims that’s enough herring to cover a football field in 20 feet of the silver fish. The ads call the harvest “excessive.”
