USCG Auxiliary offers Sitkans a chance to try their own lifejackets

The Coast Guard Auxilary in Sitka is holding a couple of safety events: A life jacket practice session at the Blatchley Pool, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, when residents are invited to try out their personal flotation gear (participants are welcome to wear clothing in the pool, but it must be clean); and free courtesy exams for trailered recreational and charter boats noon - 4 p.m. April 21, in the Sitka High parking lot.

‘Food Web Cruise’ sets sail this Saturday (brunch included!)

Justine Webb is the field station coordinator for the Sitka Sound Science Center and Jan Straley is a humpback whale biologist with the University of Alaska Southeast. They're preparing for this Saturday's Food Web Cruise (8:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 24, departing from Crescent Harbor; tickets $55 including brunch, available at Old Harbor Books or on the dock).
