A play date for June

Landscape architect Monique Anderson stands by as excavators prep the site of Sitka's new community playground. One of the three tennis courts is coming out in order to make room for the fully-accessible design, which will come to over $800,000 when it's completed in mid-June. The project is 90-percent funded by grants from the Rasmuson Foundation, the US Land & Water Conservation Fund, and private donations. Sitka's cash outlay will only be around $50,000.

‘Addams Family’ musical a romcom for the not-so-normal

Addams Family producer Shannon Haugland is joined by stars Bailey Craig (Morticia) and Zeke Blackwell (Lucas) to discuss the musical theater spin-off of the 1970s-era television show of the same name. The show opens 7 p.m. Friday, March 23, at the Sitka Performing Arts Center (with additional performances 7 p.m. Saturday, March 24, and a matinee 3 p.m. Sunday, March 25).

Cross Trail $20,000 from fundraising finish line

Sitka Trail Works is launching a $20,000 local fundraising campaign to extend the Cross Trail from Kramer Avenue to the ferry terminal and cruise ship dock. This campaign is a part of a 9% match to earn $1.8 million in federal funds.

Sitka Slayers take on Seattle Throttle Rockets in weekend grudge match

Lisa Hutton (aka Hotwheelz) and Stephanie Kruse (Titan) with the Sitka Sound Slayers Roller Derby League discuss this weekend's game against the Rat City Throttle Rockets (7 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at the Hames Center, tickets $15 at Old Harbor Books, kids 5 and under free). The two teams met last year and Sitka scored a narrow victory.

Boating class teaches beginners and salts to manage the unexpected

"Suddenly in Command" is a boating safety class tailored for students who don't plan on being in charge of a vessel during an operational emergency, but might be in that role nonetheless, if the captain or operator is somehow incapacitated. USCG Auxiliary Sitka Flotilla member Mike Morris has taught the class for ten years. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 24, upstairs in the Masonic Lodge (above the furniture store at the roundabout).
