During this week’s Chamber meeting (1-28-15), members talked with local officials who are helping to shape the policies that Sitka may adopt if commercial marijuana becomes a reality.

Nomination close Friday for BP Teachers of Excellence

Tara Stevens, Associate Director for Government & Public Affairs with BP, discusses the company's teacher recognition program, BP Teachers of Excellence. Nominations are open through Friday, Januar 30. Nomination forms can be found online here. There have been two recent Sitka winners, Christy Anderson (2014) and Michael Mahoney (2012), both from Mt. Edgecumbe High School. Stevens is hoping to see more nominations from Sitka this year. Thirty-three teachers will be recognized in the 20th anniversary year of the program. Downloadable audio.

New Sealaska logging sites near earlier cuts

Sealaska says it will begin logging its new lands later this year. The first parcels cut will be on Prince of Wales Island and the Cleveland Peninsula.

‘DUCKumentary’ kicks off park’s environmental film series

Sitka National Historical Park ranger Ryan Carpenter, the Sitka Conservation Society's Mary Wood, and the Sitka Sound Science Center's Ashley Bolwerk are collaborating on a winter film series at the park. The first screening, DUCKumentary, is tonight (7 PM Wed Jan 28 and 2 PM Sat Jan 31, SNHP theater, free admission). Carpenter says Sitka's waterfowl are some of the most beautiful anywhere, and they live fascinating lives. Downloadable audio.

Artesian well cleaned to improve flows; will open Wednesday

The Forest Service temporarily closed the artesian well for system inspection last Wednesday (1-21-15). District Ranger Perry Edwards says the water was always safe to drink. The problem was that it was coming out too slowly.

Mt. Edgecumbe DDF poised for state tourney

The state Drama, Debate, and Forensics tournament is set for Feb 19 - 21 in Anchorage. This year Mt. Edgecumbe will be taking 12 competitors -- their largest team in many years. With coach Marcia Drake and team members Aana Rangitsch (jr - Palmer) and Jinglin Yang (jr - China). Downloadable audio.
