The Dauenhauers teach tour guides how to teach tourists

Two of greatest living scholars on Sitka’s Russian and Tlingit past were in town last week to train National Park rangers on the historic battles that took place here. Park rangers give programs, of course, but sometimes they’ll interact with visitors for only a few minutes at a time. So the challenge is: How do you teach visitors about the culture in a way that will have impact - when the most commonly-asked question is “Where’s the bathroom?”

The last five days of the 28th legislature were a scramble to get bills out the door. Two items of particular interest to the residents of Sen. Kreiss-Tomkins: Legislator-in-motion

In 2013, Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins went to Juneau as a 23-year-old novice lawmaker. He returned last week, at the end of his freshman term, as the sponsor of a successful Native languages bill that got national attention. Kreiss-Tomkins is up for reelection in November. He stopped by KCAW to discuss his summer plans, the virtues of sometimes doing nothing, and how to cope with Juneau when you’re a freshman in the minority.

Bradshaw to wrap up career in Montana

The Sitka School Board bid fond farewells to 24 three staff members Monday night (5-5-14) -- including superintendent Steve Bradshaw, who has landed a new job in Montana. The board met for its final regular meeting during the school year. A reception for retirees was held just prior to the meeting.

Trollers hit record in last week of winter fishing

Salmon trollers shattered their one-week harvest record, as the winter fishery came to a close last week. The Alaska Department of Fish & Game reports that trollers landed a total of 55,000 kings between October and April, which is their best season since 2005. But it was that last week of April that re-wrote the record books.

Seasonal store unpacks for cruise opener

The first cruise ship of the season arrives in Sitka tomorrow/today (Wed May 7) and that means many local business are scrambling to get ready. The seasonal stores -- those that build their inventory from scratch every May -- are especially feeling the pressure. On Tuesday afternoon in the Sitka Fur Gallery, the metallic mannequins are still naked with less than 24 hours to go before the first wave of visitors arrives. Store manager Andy Nichols and his employee James talked about how things are going.
