Roller Derby on the road

Have you caught the Roller Derby fever? You're in luck! The Sitka Sound Slayers are headed to Juneau this weekend to take on the Juneau Extra Roughs in their first away bout. If you're in Juneau you can catch it in the flesh at Centennial Hall, but if you're not, 360 North will be broadcasting it live at this link. The bout begins at 8pm on Saturday, May 31st.

Yakutat back on the air

After being off the air for three days, Raven Radio can now be heard in Yakutat once again. With help from Coast Alaska Engineers, Yakutat local, Kris Widdows identified the severed cable and along with another dedicated volunteer, replaced the conduit and got things back up and running! Thanks for your patience while we got this fixed, and a big thanks to the volunteers who made it happen!

Biologist to take reins at Sitka Ranger District

Perry_Edwards The Tongass National Forest has promoted a biologist with interdisciplinary skills to job of Sitka District Ranger. Perry Edwards has been with the Sitka District for nine years, most recently in charge of the ecosystem staff. Edwards replaces Carol Goularte.

Hilyard: Halibut regs better with sport guides at table

Southeast Alaska’s sport fishing guides have taken a more active role in the management of their industry, easing tensions with the commercial fishing sector. But they wouldn’t mind a simpler formula to allocate halibut. Heath Hilyard is the executive director of SEAGO, or the Southeast Alaska Guides Organization. He spoke to the Sitka Chamber of Commerce this afternoon (Wed 5-21-14).

Sitka loses another administrator to Montana

School is finishing up for the year, and Sitka will be down another administrator. Kathi Yanamura has resigned as the principal of Baranof Elementary. She’ll be moving to Montana to become principal of the Gateway Elementary School in Columbia Falls.
