MEHS Wrestling builds family

Mt. Edgecumbe High School Wrestling coach Mike Kimber says it takes a while, but his team eventually comes together as a family. This year, 20 of his 60 athletes are girls. He's hoping to establish a girls' season in the future. With KCAW's Brian Hanson.

Board adopts Common Core for English Language Arts studies

The Sitka School Board on Monday night adopted a new English Language Arts curriculum for the district, beginning next school year. The so-called ELA is designed to prepare students to meet new standards developed by the state Department of Education. Alaska’s standards are closely aligned with national standards adopted by 45 other states, and usually referred to as “Common Core.”

Lawrence “Woody” Widmark is one of six candidates for Sitka Tribe of Alaska Tribal Council. He is running for re-election and has a long history serving on the Tribal Council, but he says it was never really his choice.

WhaleFest film festival opens door to science

Maybe it was a teacher in grade school, or a visiting scientist, who first talked about the pursuit of knowledge as a way of life. This year’s Sitka WhaleFest opened with several short films about scientists that also try to make science accessible.

Survey to help guide marine development at SCIP

Sitka’s large-boat owners are being invited to help shape the direction of the marine services industry in town. Sawmill Cove Industrial Park has prepared an online survey to help gauge the demand in the community for everything from covered work areas to a haul out for large vessels.
