Sitka’s Linda Behnken honored with national award for work on sustainable fisheries

The Heinz Family Foundation announced the winners of the twenty-fifth annual Heinz Awards on Tuesday (10-13-20), and the director of the Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association was among them. Sitka’s Linda Behnken was one of five individuals honored with the prestigious award, which includes a $250,000 unrestricted cash prize, for her work as a sustainable fisheries advocate.

New coronavirus case reported in Angoon

Angoon’s Mayor Joshua Bowen announced the new case on Wednesday (10-14-20) and said that contact tracing is underway. Free testing for Angoon residents is available Wednesday (10-14-20) and Thursday at the Jessie Norma Jean Health Clinic from 2 to 4 p.m.

The Sheldon Jackson Museum’s Native Artist Residency Program goes virtual

The Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum has sponsored the Alaska Native Artist Residency Program for over 30 years. Operating during the pandemic hasn't been easy, but they've adapted by going virtual to bring artist-in-residents to the community for talks and workshops. Tlingit artist Pamela Johnson began her residency on Oct. 1 and will spend the time working in the museum's gallery, teaching an eight-part regalia making class over Zoom and giving an artist talk.

The pandemic has disrupted all of our lives in some way or another, but it’s had a particularly dramatic impact on the lives of college students.

2020 listening community elections: Unofficial results

Unofficial results are in for most communities around the region following yesterday’s (10-6-20) municipal elections. Official results won’t be ready until early next week, but as of right now, numbers are in for Angoon, Kake, Port Alexander and Tenakee Springs.
