With first missed paycheck, Alaska’s federal workers file for state benefits

The extended government shutdown has left thousands of Alaskans without paychecks this week. And now, hundreds of those furloughed federal workers are filing unemployment claims -- some of them likely in Sitka. Almost 10 times as many Alaskans filed for unemployment in December than filed in November, which state officials directly link to the federal shutdown.

Sitka’s plummeting school enrollment poses funding challenge

Enrollment in the Sitka School District is in a steep decline. During the very first walk-through of the 2020 numbers on Wednesday (1-9-19), district officials projected a budget next year based on 1,187 students -- a loss of 89 students in three years. How much the city will contribute to local schools remains an unknown.
