Gwich’in author Matt Gilbert aims for the universe, and beyond

Matt Gilbert has published a couple of seminal books, "Sitting at Their Feet" and "The Gwich'in Climate Report." But he's got a side hustle: Science Fiction. He hopes his stories carry the Gwich'in worldview into space.

This weekend: A ‘swarm’ of volcanology programs in Sitka, with scientists from the Alaska Volcano Observatory

Sitka's Mt. Edgecumbe created a stir last year when an earthquake "swarm" was detected below it, suggesting that magma was moving. Things have been quieter recently, but AVO geologists are keeping an eye on it. There will be a series of programs this weekend in Sitka to update the public on the status of the volcano.

Sitka officials welcome a ‘Brilliant’ inaugural port call

Royal Carribean's Brilliance of the Seas was formally welcomed to Sitka on Tuesday (5-2-23) by Deputy Mayor Kevin Mosher and Tribal representative Yeílsú Harry Lysons. With a capacity of only 2,400 passengers and 800 crew, the Brilliance is considered a mid-size cruise ship in the current market.

State drops evidence tampering case against Richard Mulligan

A Sitka man who was charged with evidence tampering after his daughter killed a cyclist in a hit-and-run won’t stand trial. The state’s case against Richard Mulligan was dismissed earlier this month after a Superior Court judge threw out improperly collected evidence against him.
