High Wind Warning for Southeast on Friday

Due to Hurricane Oho, the National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for coastal areas of Southeast Alaska, including Baranof Island, from 8 AM to 7 PM Friday, October 9. Forecasters say residents should expect sustained winds of 40 - 55 mph, with gusts to 75.

Crunching voter turnout data: Was this a good year?

If you’re worried about the state of democracy in Sitka, we have some good news for you. Though voting got off to a slow start on Election Day, the overall turnout was a bit higher than last year, though not by much.

Unofficial election results rolled in from around the region last night (10-06-15). Though the winners aren’t official, this is where the numbers stand now for Kake, Angoon, Pelican, Tenakee Springs, and Port Alexander.

Two precincts generate 1,700+ votes in Sitka

While the polling station at Harrigan Centennial Hall is closed for renovations, Sitka voters went to two separate camps yesterday. Precinct 1 voted at Grace Harbor Church and Precinct 2 voted at St. Gregory’s Church. After casting her own vote, KCAW’s Emily Kwong took the pulse of voter turnout.
