Sitka’s emergency responders line up for coronavirus vaccine

Many of Sitka’s frontline health care workers and first responders joined others around the state on Wednesday (11-16-20) when they received doses of the coronavirus vaccine. The first shipment of the Pfizer vaccine arrived in Sitka early Wednesday morning.

Sitka Chamber invites Sitkans to “Share Your Spark” this holiday season

During the pandemic, many of us have gotten creative with how we celebrate the holidays. The Sitka Chamber of Commerce has adapted by creating the "Share Your Spark" campaign, a way to connect during the time of social distancing. The campaign started during the Fourth of July celebrations, and now it's continuing into the holiday season.

Sitka church rings bell 300 times for every 1,000 lives lost to the coronavirus

More than 300,000 Americans have died from the coronavirus since February. In honor of those lives lost, Sitka’s St. Peter’s Episcopal Church joined the National Cathedral and churches around the country, and rang its bell 300 times this afternoon/on Tuesday afternoon.

Yakutat’s active coronavirus case count rises to 4

Yakutat has reported two new cases of the coronavirus. That’s following news last week that two people in Yakutat tested positive after more than six weeks without a reported case in the community.

Tenakee residents hope new, multi-million dollar dock means regular ferry service

The town of Tenakee Springs saw its first ferry in more than five months Wednesday evening (11-9-20) after the completion of a new city dock. Float planes and private vessels provided the only transportation while the state contractor Western Marine Construction constructed the eleven million dollar project. But some Tenakee residents worry that the new facility won’t get the use it was intended for.

Yakutat announces second coronavirus case this week

The City and Borough of Yakutat announced a new case of COVID-19 on Wednesday. The Yakutat Community Health Center is conducting contact tracing and believes the new case is tied to another positive announced on Monday, the community’s first in more than six weeks.

Thanksgiving rescue a blessing for entangled whale and Tenakee responders

Large whale entanglements are fairly rare in Alaska. Only around 10 are spotted each year, and most whales shed the marine debris or fishing gear on their own. But once or twice a year, human intervention is required to save a whale’s life. On Thanksgiving Day, the small community of Tenakee Springs came together to do just that.
