Sen. Sullivan: Coast Guard responsibilities in Alaska to increase

Alaska Sen. Dan Sullivan was in Sitka over the weekend (8-25-18) with newly-appointed Coast Guard Commandant Karl L. Schultz. He spoke with KCAW's Emily Kwong about the increased presence of the Coast Guard he hopes to see in the state. He also hoped to use his role as chair of the Senate Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard to organized field hearings this fall on the decline of king salmon stocks.

Sitka police officer files whistleblower lawsuit

A Sitka police officer has filed a whistleblower lawsuit against the city. Veteran Sitka police detective Ryan Silva alleges that the police department has harassed and demoted him after he complained about the improper purchase of automatic weapons.

Tobacco 21 starts today!

The age to purchase tobacco in Sitka rises from 19 to 21 as of today (Wednesday, August 22, 2018). Health educator Amanda Roberts explains that the Tobacco 21 project is an effort to reduce teen initiation into smoking, and to create a smoke-free generation.
