Sitka legislator teams up to develop national coronavirus model

Sitka Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins has partnered with a group of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs -- including Google executive Max Henderson -- to develop a new website, covidactnow.org. In a very short time, the site has influenced policy-makers across the country, as they impose stricter measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

Homeowner extinguishes bathroom blaze

Sitka firefighters responded to a small fire in a home bathroom on Monday afternoon (3-23-20). Chief engineer Craig Warren says the firehall received the call at 4:35 P.M. on Monday that a wastebasket was on fire in the bathroom of an upstairs apartment on Edgecumbe Drive. By the time firefighters had arrived on scene, the homeowner had contained the fire with a chemical extinguisher.

What ‘Shelter in Place’ means in Sitka

Queen Charlotte Fault study to disclose secrets of ‘The San Andreas of the Pacific’

Lindsay Worthington is a professor at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM. She and USGS geologist Maureen Walton are heading up a major project to study the undersea Queen Charlotte Fault system, which they call "The San Andreas of the Pacific." The fault, which is offshore of Southeast Alaska, has had more frequent and larger seismic events over recent decades than its California cousin.

Online US Census count opens today!

Thursday, March 12, is the first day residents can respond to the US Census online. Sarah Peterson, Kari Sagel, and Margot O'Connell talk about what Sitkans can expect, and why it's a valuable tool for Southeast residents. The survey takes about 10 minutes, has only 10 questions, and asks for fewer details than the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend application.
