Yaaw Koo.eex’ to celebrate what is ‘important to us all’

Louise Brady describes the schedule for the Saturday, April 6, Koo.eex' hosted by the Sitka Kiks.adi. A canoe will be launched from Old Sitka, and paddled to Crescent Harbor with a planned arrival time of 1 p.m. Everyone will then march to the ANB Founders Hall for the 2 p.m. koo.eex' (translated literally as "an invitation").

Retrospective: The Great Alaska Quake turns 55

55 years ago, on March 27, 1964, a magnitude 9.2 earthquake struck Southcentral Alaska. In 2014, on the fiftieth anniversary of the Great Alaska Quake, KCAW’s Emily Forman prepared a five-part retrospective of the event, featuring residents who experienced it first hand -- both in Anchorage and in Southeast.

Sitka man arrested on federal weapons charges, loses trailer to fire

44-year old Jeremy Beebe was arrested by Sitka police on March 5, and handed over to federal authorities, on charges that he illegally possessed weapons as a felon. Beebe made news in 2016 when he attempted to elude capture by digging a tunnel system under his home in the Vitskari Trailer Court. That structure burned to the ground Monday night (3-25-19).
