In Sitka, Christmas comes but twice a year!

The Feast of the Nativity (or "Russian Christmas," as it is commonly called) is celebrated throughout the Orthodox Church in America on January 7. But it's not as if Eastern and Western Christianity couldn't agree on the date to celebrate the Nativity. Much of Orthodox Christianity observes the Julian calendar, which is 13 days behind the Gregorian calendar.

Former ADF&G commissioner to head Sitka’s Silver Bay Seafoods

Former Alaska Department of Fish & Game Commissioner Cora Campbell has been named CEO of Sitka-based Silver Bay Seafoods, as of January 1, 2019. Campbell has held the title of chief external affairs officer for Silver Bay since June of 2018. She was commissioner of the Alaska Department of Fish & Game under Governor Sean Parnell from 2010 to 2014.

4-H camp explores Sitka’s ‘Winter Wonders’

The Sitka Conservation Society and the UAS Cooperative Extension are teaming up to offer a three-day "4-H Winter Wonders Camp," 9:30-noon Monday, January 7 through Wednesday, January 9. Only two places remain available for elementary school students. To register, call Kevan at 747-7509.

Pick. Click. Give. is a chance for Alaskans to use part of their Permanent Fund Dividends to contribute to causes they care about. After they complete their online PFD applications, residents are given the option to choose to donate a portion of their dividends to one of 600 participating nonprofits.

Sitka’s Christmas Bird Count set for December 29

Victoria Vosburg and Jen Cedarleaf have organized Sitka's version of the Audubon Christmas Bird Count for the last 12 years. Volunteers are needed to count birds on about 30 mapped routes this Saturday, December 29. A planning meeting and slideshow are scheduled for 6 p.m. tonight (Wed 12-26-18) at the Alaska Raptor Rehabilitation Center.

Commentary: Commercial herring seining and subsistence are my family traditions

I’d like to state that as a consumer of herring subsistence that I am in support of subsistence and commercial harvesting.
