Gov. Mike Dunleavy will deliver his first State of the State address to a joint session of the Alaska Legislature beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 22. The 13th Annual Mt. Edgecumbe Invitational Basketball Tournament is underway in Sitka this weekend. A tournament for grown-ups, the event is a fundraiser for MEHS Athletics. Championship games tip-off beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 19 at the BJ McGillis Field House.

Land swap removes Sitka’s Indian River from Trust’s logging list

The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority board approved its largest land exchange to date earlier this month (1-3-19), sparing over 400 acres in Sitka's Indian River valley from future logging. Through the deal, up to 40,000 acres of land in and around Southeast communities will change hands between the Trust and the U.S. Forest Service.

Sentinel Sports: Crossover basketball sharpens skills for tournament play

Early season crossover play can make a difference for high school basketball teams in small regions, like Sitka and Mt. Edgecumbe high schools -- which are the only 3A teams in Region V. 4A Ketchikan will visit in February to take on the Braves. Students rush Jan. 1 registration at Sitka Fine Arts Camp

The rush is on in Sitka for spaces at this summer’s Sitka Fine Arts Camp. Camp director Roger Schmidt says that he opened registration at 12:01 a.m. on January 1st, and within the first hour 240 students had registered for the middle school and high school camps: A new record.

Baranof Elementary saltwater aquarium to be rededicated Tuesday

Kari Sagel, Jessica Christianson, and Norm Campbell discuss next Tuesday's (1-15-19) re-dedication of the Baranof Elementary School saltwater aquarium (5:45 p.m. - 6:45 p.m., with a 15-minute ceremony). There will be an unveiling of a piece by 23-year reading volunteer and textile artist Nancy Ricketts, and a free hot-dog feed.
