A new round of vaccine in Sitka means we are ‘1b at last!’

Bad weather had delayed the arrival of the cargo flight on Thursday. Sitka residents 65 and older and all healthcare workers (aka "1b Tier 1" in the state's nomenclature) are eligible to receive the vaccine.

Downed tree on Jeff Davis Street causes power outage

Recent high winds caused at least one power outage this week. A tree on Jeff Davis Street fell, blocking traffic and damaging power lines on Wednesday (1-14-20) afternoon. According to a press release, the Sitka Electric Department is working on removing the damaged tree and restoring power to the area. City staff ask that the area be avoided if possible until the repairs are made.

Sitka’s annual ‘Bird Count’ leaders discuss this year’s big finds and trends

Jennifer Cedarleaf and Victoria Vosburg organize and run the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count in Sitka (and have done so for the last 14 years!). This year's count was January 2.

‘Opening the Box’ kits allow students to explore space between art, science, and culture

SeaAlaska Heritage is providing Blatchley students with a "maker kit" in January. The kits, which are going out to over 1,300 students in six Southeast communities, emphasize traditional learning and hands-on experience in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math). The first kit will have the kids sewing face masks. There will be new kits for students for the next three months.

Commentary: A haulout will benefit more than Sitka’s boats

A marine haulout, especially a city-run one, would help to develop a stronger infrastructure for Sitka and, ultimately, a more sustainable future for the community.
